Creating Charlotte & Lewis's bespoke mountain view inspired wedding accessories print design.

Kerri O'Brien

I absolutely adore working on bespoke designs to make a wedding truly personal to the couple getting married. Every one of the projects I’ve worked on has been a joy, and it is such a privilege to be trusted with happy memories, emotional moments and special travel stories in order to create items which reflect a couple’s journey.

I first had the pleasure of meeting Lewis & Charlotte at Crafty Fox Market and then the UnWedding show. After showing them some of the accessories I could create for them, Lewis came to me with his vision to design a print with a "City Pop" theme, a feel good genre of Japanese music, think 80s Miami meets Tokyo. Which would also reflect their memories of travelling in Japan. He referenced memories of their view from the onsen (hot springs) and one of his favourite artists, Hiroshi Nagai.

He also wanted to integrate their stunning wedding venue and the amazing geometric wedding cake they had planned from ARD Bakery. There was an overall theme of architectural shapes, landscapes, lines, tropical plants, curves and fun colour pops and I couldn’t wait to get started!

The colours were influenced by the bride Charlotte’s save-the-date invite, colours in the venue, as well as Lewis’s deep navy suit (with an amazing pop of pink in the detailed stitching!). There were lots of references to water, green lines and blue hues in the swimming pool, as well as the mountain view from the onsen. With so many beautiful elements, it was really exciting to create this imaginary scene.

I made braces, bowties and pocket squares for Lewis and the groom’s party, as well as headbands for the bridesmaids and Charlotte. The final touch was gifts for the wedding party, including scrunchies and silk scarves for the mums.

The whole wedding was cleverly brought full circle by integrating the bespoke print as the backdrop to the wedding ceremony, weaving in elements of the view of the onsen from the perspective of being in the pool. As you can see from the photos, the backdrop worked so well with the venue, and connected the moment they exchanged vows with such special memories.

Sustainability is really important to me and as always, the accessories and gifts I created for Lewis and Charlotte were designed to have a lifespan long beyond the wedding day as they can be worn again and again. I digitally print all my fabrics, only printing what I need, and I use every last bit of fabric so there is zero waste in my production process. I use natural and recycled fabric and print using eco inks. All the accessories were presented in recycled gift boxes.

Thank you so much Charlotte and Lewis for choosing me to be part of your very special day. It was a joy to work with you.
